Abstract

This study examines how Yemeni youth who were directly involved in political armed conflict transition into peacebuilding roles and identities. Using a qualitative instrumental case study, we conducted in-depth interviews with eight purposively selected participants from five cities. Interviews were recorded online due to travel constraints, transcribed in Arabic, and then translated into English. The transcripts were analyzed in NVivo using open and axial coding. The trustworthiness of the findings was enhanced by triangulation (interviews, field notes, documents), member checking, peer debriefing, and researcher reflexivity. Findings suggest that disillusionment with armed groups, aspirations for a better future, a heightened sense of social responsibility, and humanitarian concerns facilitate to the transition from violent to nonviolent civic participation. Participants framed “peacebuilding” as the protection of civilian rights, restoring state institutions and the rule of law, and disarming armed actors. The study advances debates on youth agency and prosocial transformation in conflict settings, reframing Yemeni youth not as risks but as capable agents of change whose experiences can inform context-sensitive peacebuilding policies and practices.
